Sky Box Tree House

The “Sky Box” soars over 30 feet above the topsoil. This one-of-a-kind work of art sits on a magnificent ranch overlooking the Texas Hill Country horizon. Self-sustaining – it sports its own well, septic, electricity with solar backup and heat/ac for all-year-round comfort. One bedroom with full bath and galley kitchen. Spiral staircase to open-floor rumpus room below.

Before…the spot has been chosen.
Big tree. Bigger vision. Let’s keep both.
After…the completed ‘sky box’. Over 30 feet tall and the perfect marriage of natural and man-made splendor.
The shape takes shape. The original plans were for just a sky-high living space. We suggested a lower platform be added for kids and wine sipping at sunset.
The client loved the deck idea and added “let’s close that in and make it two stories”. We never pass on a great idea. A first floor was added with plans to put a ground level deck underneath for a hammock and outside chilling.
The first floor became an open room with yard-facing windows. Under the windows she planned homework stations for the grandkids with bunk beds on the side wall. Oh, and a custom-made spiral staircase welded on site to bypass the outside staircase if they want.
Spiral staircase to upstairs apt. Sliding doors with closet on left and door that can cover staircase if desired. Full bath to the left. Entire upstairs done in cedar. Walls, ceilings, trim as well as hardwood floors.
Bathroom with tile floor, stone wall. Perfect synthesis of elegance and nature.
Stone shower with light-flooding transom window and dual shower heads. Rustic elegance in the sky.
Kitchen area with fridge cabinet.
Bedroom off kitchen with storage loft above. Beautiful wood beams and pitched ceiling add height and elegance.
Front deck cantilevers over the yard with incredible property views. French doors keep elements out and bring nature in.
Railing spindles sourced from the property add countrified appeal.
Custom stained glass adds a stunning spectrum of light to the already elegant geometric overhead view.
The ‘sky box’ entrance features a welcoming flared staircase to a covered porch landing leading to stairs on the left to access upper living area.
It’s not a painting, it’s the Texas Hill Country in all its splendor.
Engineered deep concrete reinforced footers support structural posts with seat-cuts for let-in girder beams. Engineered bracing adds additional structural integrity. Having years of experience building multi-million-dollar hurricane code compliant houses on stilts at the beach in The Outer Banks came in handy on this project.
