Yoga Studio Tree House

Nestled in a secluded grove in Austin adjacent Westlake Hills, Texas, a shape not found in nature emerges. An octagon. Made of cedar and glass this Yoga studio treehouse has 8 equal sides which to the owner, symbolizes rebirth regeneration and harmony. To all involved, it represented a complex structural challenge, but the unabashed joy the finished treehouse gave our client ultimately made it all worthwhile. Octagons provide 20% more space than a square with the same perimeter and let in more natural light with panoramic views. Exactly what the client, #morganmaliayoga, requested and received.

In topography terms we were building on a very steeply sloping terrain. At this degree of slope, water and soil run rapidly downhill. Major cement footers were needed to make sure our project didn’t.
The 8-sided shape was important. But so was the view from the room. Large windows were needed to bring the outside in. Extra support around those windows was in order for structural integrity.
A squirrel’s-eye view from the woods is imposing. It soon will blend into the landscape.
8 walls mean an 8-sided grand ceiling. The front entry begins its own transformation.
What would an 8-sided building be without a one-of-a-kind 8-sided skylight.
Does the custom skylight let the client touch the sky or have the sky touch them? Yes!
Using trees from the property to create an attention-grabbing entry ramp.
Très Bohemian Chic!
In the end, the 25sq ft bottom windows flood the room with light while the top transom windows slide open for added ventilation and comfort.
Custom wood storage and workspace meld with the project’s ecosystem.
Daily nurturing curtesy of Mother Nature.
Working from home is now quite tree-freshing. #morganmaliayoga
